Since 1998, students at The Expressive Arts Institute have provided more than 39,000 hours at 90+ different internship sites in San Diego City and County, and places as far away as Hungary and Germany.  Our Student Interns dedicate this time to hone the craft  of Expressive Arts Facilitation working with underserved, at risk and needy populations. But there remain many unserved populations. The goal of the Expressive Arts Foundation is to help students afford the professional education they need to help others in all the diverse communities in San Diego County and beyond.

Dr. Essex has been working as an arts based therapist since 1972, and has helped hundreds of people, groups, and organizations create and manage change  through the arts.

In 1998, she founded an Institute to provide a best-practice-standards training for professionals in Expressive Arts Therapy.
